Diabetic Eye Exam
It is vital that a person diagnosed with diabetes has a comprehensive vision exam by an eye doctor every year.  Diabetes can lead to the development of new blood vessels in the back of the eyeball, which over time may leak and cause damage to the retina, resulting in vision loss.  If caught early enough, changes in diet or medication may alter the advancement of these dangers and help protect your sight.  Our Optometrists communicate with your primary care physicians to relay findings which assist your physician in determining the number and types of medications necessary to maintain proper diabetic control.  With the aid of advanced digital retinal photography at our office, the earliest changes associated with diabetes can be detected by our Optometrists.  In the case of advanced diabetic eye disease, our Optometrists work closely with board certified retinal specialists in the area to refer patients for sight saving laser treatment and or injections.  It is our commitment to explain compassionately the diabetic retinal status and treatment options when necessary.

Contact Lens Evaluation & Fit
Whether our Optometrists are fitting gas permeable hard contact lenses, or daily, 2 week or monthly soft disposable contact lenses, the process still begins with special measurements of the front surface of your eye with an instrument called a keratometer.  This gives your Optometrist a starting point for determining the proper curvature and size for your individualized contact lenses.  Then a determination of the contact lens type is made based on your glasses prescription and a review of your visual needs.  This may result in soft contacts that are spherical, toric contacts correcting for astigmatism, bifocal or mono vision contact lenses, colored contact lenses or specialty contact lenses designed to fit irregular corneas.  Next your Optometrist utilizes trial lenses and evaluates them to judge the fit and your response to the vision and physical comfort of the lenses.  Your Optometrist will do this at each follow up visit to access your compatibility to the trial lenses with increasing hours of lens wear and to ensure no adverse side affects to the contact lenses.  After your Optometrist is sure your lenses fit properly providing satisfactory vision and comfort and are causing no harm to your eyes, your final contact lens prescription can be written.  Please note that it may take several visits to ensure a proper fit depending on the complexity of your prescription.

Telehealth Eye Examinations
You don't always have to come to the Madeira & Kenwood area to seek eye treatment. We are committed to providing state-of-the art eye care, including telemedicine, or telehealth eye examinations by an eye doctor where appropriate. Telemedicine exams are not a replacement for a comprehensive eye exam, but can be useful for urgent care or emergency care concerns like pink eye/conjunctivitis or styes/hordeolum, particularly when the patient cannot attend a physical exam with an eye dr. Please visit our patient portal or call the office to see if a tele-health vision exam is right for you.
